What can we expect from cloud computing as the technology advances?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Verdana',sans-serif;\">IBM\u2019s Purchase of Red Hat<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">On Sunday, October 28, 2018, tech giant IBM announced that they were purchasing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.redhat.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Red Hat<img class=\"extlink-icon\" src=\"https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/plugins\/external-links-nofollow-open-in-new-tab-favicon\/images\/extlink.png\"><\/a>, the open software that currently partners with many of IBM\u2019s biggest competitors, including Google, Amazon, and Microsoft. The deal is set to be finalized in early 2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">This will be one of the biggest ever technological collaborations, with minds from some of the largest software companies in existence coming together to produce a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/bobevans1\/2018\/10\/30\/how-ibm-and-red-hat-plus-microsoft-are-driving-cloud-transformation-2-0\/#cc5ef69484c4\">hybrid cloud<\/a>. Hybrid clouds are computing environments that allow data to be transferred across private and public clouds that are typically isolated from each other.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">Cloud systems are extremely useful, but up until now they have been difficult to integrate with other systems. This is largely due to the fact that the companies specializing in cloud computing\u2014again, Google, Amazon and Microsoft\u2014purposefully secluded themselves to avoid sharing the spotlight. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">It is also because the first incarnation of any new software tends to be very specified, and it\u2019s difficult to predict on the outset what the scope will be. However, now that these software giants are going to be connected through Red Hat and working under a common name\u2014IBM\u2014we should see an emergence of new applications and better integration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Verdana',sans-serif;\">Growth<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">As more businesses move to cloud-based storage systems and the companies building them see a greater ROI, consumers should see a drop in prices. This would undoubtedly attract more people to the cloud, with the increased revenue and interest spawning yet more developments. As previously stated, the full potential of cloud computing has yet to be realized.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\"><br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/cloud-service-models.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-6038 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/cloud-service-models-300x182.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"182\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/cloud-service-models-300x182.png 300w, https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/cloud-service-models-768x467.png 768w, https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/cloud-service-models-1024x622.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/cloud-service-models.png 1656w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\"><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">Infrastructure as a service (IaaS), platform as a service (PaaS) and database as a service (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/dbaas-pros-cons\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">DBaaS<\/span><\/a>) are relatively new offerings which have increased the number of available personal and business cloud solutions. As well as an expansion in the variety of cloud systems, storage limits continue to increase even as prices fall, and these trends will likely continue under the control of IBM and their new partners.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Verdana',sans-serif;\">Smaller Hardware<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">Much like CDs replaced floppy disks, cloud storage could eventually make physical storage devices irrelevant. SD cards are already shrinking away to nothing, and computer hard drive disks are being replaced with smaller, smoother solid state drives. But as cloud storage increases, more of the disk space is going unused. The portability of cloud-based storage far outstrips that of even pen drives and CDs and removes the need for physical devices which can be easily damaged in transit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Verdana',sans-serif;\">Eventually, hardware such as phones, TVs, and gaming consoles may only require enough physical storage for their operating systems and a processor, and everything else is backed up to the cloud. This would result in smaller, even more portable devices, and past fads like <\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Verdana',sans-serif;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/google-glass-is-backnow-with-artificial-intelligence\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Google Glass<img class=\"extlink-icon\" src=\"https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/plugins\/external-links-nofollow-open-in-new-tab-favicon\/images\/extlink.png\"><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Verdana',sans-serif;\"> could even make a comeback. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Verdana',sans-serif;\">Security<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Verdana',sans-serif;\">With so many of us storing our lives digitally, it can feel as though we are more vulnerable than ever. While it\u2019s true that 2017 and 2018 saw a <\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Verdana',sans-serif;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2018\/06\/how-organizations-should-prepare-for-cyber-attacks-noam-erez\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">huge spike in cyber-attacks<img class=\"extlink-icon\" src=\"https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/plugins\/external-links-nofollow-open-in-new-tab-favicon\/images\/extlink.png\"><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Verdana',sans-serif;\">, we learn more about cyber security each time and the cloud storage systems get stronger as a result. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">Security will inevitably be an issue in computing of any kind, but one benefit of cloud computing remaining in the control of businesses with limitless R&amp;D budgets is that they will always improve their defenses. Some companies have begun to explore the possibility of implementing blockchain technology in cloud computing in order to improve transparency in user activity, which will help to prevent fraudulent transactions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Verdana',sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Verdana',sans-serif;\">Blockchain<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Verdana',sans-serif;\">Blockchain technology was originally introduced as a form of online banking for cryptocurrency, but it has the ability to process virtually any type of transaction. Blockchain developers have realized its potential to function as a new form of internet, with the added security benefit of being completely decentralized \u2013 hosted by <\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Verdana',sans-serif;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blockgeeks.com\/guides\/what-is-blockchain-technology\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">millions of computers simultaneously<img class=\"extlink-icon\" src=\"https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/plugins\/external-links-nofollow-open-in-new-tab-favicon\/images\/extlink.png\"><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Verdana',sans-serif;\">, much like the cloud.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/block-chain-infographic.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-6039 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/block-chain-infographic-300x158.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"158\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/block-chain-infographic-300x158.png 300w, https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/block-chain-infographic-768x403.png 768w, https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/block-chain-infographic-1024x538.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/block-chain-infographic.png 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\"><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Verdana',sans-serif;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/iex.ec\/overview\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">iExec<img class=\"extlink-icon\" src=\"https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/plugins\/external-links-nofollow-open-in-new-tab-favicon\/images\/extlink.png\"><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Verdana',sans-serif;\">\u2014a company based in Lyon, France\u2014is a big name in Blockchain technology. In May 2018, they demonstrated their decentralized cloud alongside Intel SGX (Software Guard Extensions) as a proof of concept for a new form of secure cloud computing. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">Intel SGX is a Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) that allows sections of code and specified data to be processed in isolated areas of a processor called \u201cenclaves\u201d. Enclaves create secure \u201cbubbles\u201d on a host machine, and even the root admins for the host machine are unable to inspect or interfere with the application they contain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Verdana',sans-serif;\">The successful demonstration in May proved this to be a viable solution to cloud security concerns. On October 29, 2018, iExec released a <\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Verdana',sans-serif;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/iex-ec\/iexec-end-to-end-sgx-solution-user-guide-15483b1b6d77\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">user guide<img class=\"extlink-icon\" src=\"https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/plugins\/external-links-nofollow-open-in-new-tab-favicon\/images\/extlink.png\"><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Verdana',sans-serif;\"> for their end-to-end trusted execution solution, which provides comprehensive protection for blockchain computing. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Verdana',sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Des Nnochiri Over the last decade, cloud computing has revolutionized the way we handle and store data, which has, in turn, paved the way for greater innovations in technology.
