{"id":4143,"date":"2015-10-12T14:02:51","date_gmt":"2015-10-12T19:02:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/?p=4143"},"modified":"2015-09-29T10:06:11","modified_gmt":"2015-09-29T15:06:11","slug":"scale-out-windows-file-servers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/scale-out-windows-file-servers\/","title":{"rendered":"Scale-Out Windows File Servers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Scale-Out File Server is a new feature introduced in Windows Server 2012 Edition which allows you to deploy a File Server with advanced functionalities. If you\u2019ve worked with previous Windows Server Editions you probably know that you can configure a File Server for high availability within a failover cluster. I\u2019ve configured previously this role in a two node cluster so I know the principles behind this technology, but I\u2019m still in the learning process with the new Scale-Out File Server feature. Before you proceed with the deployment of a Scale-Out File Server you must learn about the differences and advantages of this technology in comparison with the normal File Server deployment:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">This feature is preferred in scenarios where you have to deploy applications that require intensive storage usage such as SQL Servers, Hyper-V or IIS. These roles use shared folders to store data and require fast access when manipulating it.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Shares are distributed among all cluster nodes and are available for access at the same time for each one.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Scale-Out File Servers operate with increased performance than normal File Servers because they distribute requests between all cluster nodes. Thus, SoFS perform well in environments that suffer from high load.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">SoFS can only operate with CSV (Clustered Shared Volumes) because they allow simultaneous access between cluster nodes. We\u2019ve discussed previously about CSVs so please read more about this technology here.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Note that SoFS does not support features such as <i>DFS<\/i>, <i>FSRM (File Server Resource Manager)<\/i> or <i>BranchCache<\/i> so if these are required within your enterprise, then Scale-Out File Server is not the technology to opt for.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">With Scale-Out File Servers you can expect similar performance in terms of <i>availability, reliability, manageability and high performance as provided by a dedicated SAN (from Microsoft\u2019s <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/technet.microsoft.com\/en-us\/library\/hh831349.aspx\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"><i>website<\/i><img class=\"extlink-icon\" src=\"https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/plugins\/external-links-nofollow-open-in-new-tab-favicon\/images\/extlink.png\"><\/a><i>)<\/i>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">There are many ways in which you would use this new Windows Server 2012 feature, but all depends on the infrastructure requirements and the purpose of the cluster. As a conclusion, you need to remember that Scale-Out File Servers are best deployed in scenarios where data manipulation is high and good performance is required.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">I\u2019ll not insist on the deployment of failover clusters because we\u2019ve covered this aspect in previous articles so we\u2019ll proceed with the deployment of a Scale-Out File Server directly. Note that I\u2019ve already configured a two-node cluster in my VMware environment. Both machines have Windows Server 2012 installed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">The deployment of SoFS is similar to any cluster role deployment, you <i>right click<\/i> the <i>cluster name<\/i> and select <i>Configure Role<\/i> from the menu:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/failover-cluster-manager.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4144 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/failover-cluster-manager.png\" alt=\"failover cluster manager\" width=\"1021\" height=\"486\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/failover-cluster-manager.png 1021w, https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/failover-cluster-manager-300x143.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1021px) 100vw, 1021px\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Select the <i>File Server<\/i> role from the menu and proceed further:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/high-availability-wizard.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4145 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/high-availability-wizard.png\" alt=\"high availability wizard\" width=\"679\" height=\"463\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/high-availability-wizard.png 679w, https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/high-availability-wizard-300x205.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 679px) 100vw, 679px\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">You are then presented with the two possible choices: <i>File Server for general use <\/i>and <i>Scale-Out File Server for application data<\/i>. A short description is provided for each of these roles:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/high-availability-wizard-file-server-for-general-use.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4146 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/high-availability-wizard-file-server-for-general-use.png\" alt=\"high availability wizard file server for general use\" width=\"676\" height=\"468\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/high-availability-wizard-file-server-for-general-use.png 676w, https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/high-availability-wizard-file-server-for-general-use-300x208.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Select the <i>Scale-Out File Server for application data<\/i> and proceed further. The wizard will then prompt you to enter the name that will be used by clients to access this newly created role. The SoFS can also be configured easily using <i>Windows Powershell<\/i> by typing the following command:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"><i>Add-ClusterScaleOutFileServerRole -Name SoFS01 -Cluster Cluster01<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">You can now create and assing CSVs to the cluster and create shares for SoFS. Once the shares have been successfully created, you can use them for your Hyper-V or SQL machines to store data.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">A network share for SoFS can be added by <i>right clicking<\/i> on the role and selecting <i>Add File Share:<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/fail-over-cluster-manager-file-share.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4147 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/fail-over-cluster-manager-file-share.png\" alt=\"fail over cluster manager file share\" width=\"1017\" height=\"482\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/fail-over-cluster-manager-file-share.png 1017w, https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/fail-over-cluster-manager-file-share-300x142.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1017px) 100vw, 1017px\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">On a single cluster you can host multiple roles depending of course on your hardware configuration. For example, in our two node cluster we can also install and configure DHCP, IIS or SQL for high availability. But then what happens if a failure occurs in the cluster and the roles have to be failed over? Windows Server 2012 introduced a new feature called <i>Startup Priority<\/i> which allows System Administrators to specify what priority a role will take if a fail over is performed. Simply put, you can set the order in which roles will be moved and started on another cluster node. There are four priorities available, as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">High<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Medium<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Low<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">No Auto Start<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">By default a role will have a medium priority and if required, you can modify it from the <i>Change Startup Priority<\/i> menu:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/fail-over-cluster-manager-startup-priority.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4148 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/fail-over-cluster-manager-startup-priority.png\" alt=\"fail over cluster manager startup priority\" width=\"1018\" height=\"478\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/fail-over-cluster-manager-startup-priority.png 1018w, https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/fail-over-cluster-manager-startup-priority-300x141.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1018px) 100vw, 1018px\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">The <i>No Auto Start<\/i> priority will move the role to another node after all other roles have been moved, but it will not start it automatically.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">SoFS is a feature that really helped the way data is handled within a failover cluster and provides a high performance method of accessing shared data. One important aspect of Scale-Out File Server is that shares are available for all nodes part of a cluster and can be accessed simultaneously. This greatly increases the overall performance of your cluster roles which will behave as if a SAN device is used. You can host multiple roles within your clusters and roles such as Hyper-V, IIS and SQL can take advantage of the features provided by SoFS.
