One of these cool features is the ability to convert a server with full installation into a core edition and vice versa. You can perform this action because each full installation is composed of two items:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">\u2022\u00a0<i>Graphical Management Tools and Infrastructure<\/i> (Server-Gui-Mgmt-Infra) \u2013 this component provides that MMC (Microsoft Management Console) and Server Manager Console.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">\u2022\u00a0<i>Server Graphical Shell<\/i> (Server-Gui-Shell) \u2013 provides the rest of the full installation experience such as Windows Explorer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">In the <i>Add Roles and Features Wizard<\/i>, you can view these two features by navigating to <i>User Interface and Infrastructure <\/i>feature:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3816\" src=\"https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/01-add-roles-and-features-server-gui.png\" alt=\"Add Roles and Features Server GUI\" width=\"796\" height=\"564\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/01-add-roles-and-features-server-gui.png 796w, https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/01-add-roles-and-features-server-gui-300x213.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 796px) 100vw, 796px\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">To convert a Full Installation to a Core Edition, you\u2019ll have to remove these two features. To achieve this result simply select <i>Remove Roles and Features<\/i> from <i>Server Manger<\/i> console, navigate to the <i>features<\/i> tab and <i>uncheck<\/i> these two. Note that the <i>Server Graphical Shell<\/i> is dependent on the <i>Graphical Management Tools and Infrastructure<\/i> feature so uninstalling this one will also remove the other and also <i>Windows Powershell ISE<\/i>:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3817\" src=\"https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/02-remove-roles-features-server-manager.png\" alt=\"Remove Roles Features Server Manager\" width=\"425\" height=\"445\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/02-remove-roles-features-server-manager.png 425w, https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/02-remove-roles-features-server-manager-287x300.png 287w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 425px) 100vw, 425px\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">You can achieve similar results by using Windows Powershell. To view available commands with the Server Manager module, type the following command: <i>Get-Command -Module ServerManager<\/i>:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3821\" src=\"https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/powershell-server-manager-module.png\" alt=\"Powershell Server Manager Module\" width=\"867\" height=\"201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/powershell-server-manager-module.png 867w, https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/powershell-server-manager-module-300x70.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 867px) 100vw, 867px\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">To remove the features you\u2019ll have to provide the Powershell names. You can view them by using the <i>Get-WindowsFeature<\/i> cmdlet:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3820\" src=\"https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/powershell-select-administrator-remove-features.png\" alt=\"Powershell Select Administrator Remove Features\" width=\"868\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/powershell-select-administrator-remove-features.png 868w, https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/powershell-select-administrator-remove-features-300x161.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 868px) 100vw, 868px\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">Now simply execute <i>Remove-WindowsFeature Server-Gui-Mgmt-Infra \u2013restart <\/i>command and wait for the uninstall process to finish.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3822\" src=\"https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/remove-windows-feature-server-gui-management-infrastructure.png\" alt=\"Remove Windows Feature Server GUI Management Infrastructure\" width=\"642\" height=\"241\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/remove-windows-feature-server-gui-management-infrastructure.png 642w, https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/remove-windows-feature-server-gui-management-infrastructure-300x113.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 642px) 100vw, 642px\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">Once the server restarts, you will be presented to the <i>Server Core Interface<\/i> which only includes Command Prompt (you can also start a Powershell console).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">Windows Server 2012 offers the possibility of installing only the <i>Graphical Management Tools and Infrastructure<\/i> feature on top of the Server Core. This feature\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 allows an Sysadmin to use <i>Server Manager Console<\/i>, <i>MMC<\/i> and a portion of <i>Control Panel <\/i>within the Server Core Edition. This configuration type is also known as <i>Minimal Server Interface<\/i>. Now proceed with the installation by executing <i>Install-WindowsFeature Server-Gui-Mgmt-Infra<\/i> command. Note that I\u2019ve first started Powershell from Command Prompt:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3819\" src=\"https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/minimal-server-interface.png\" alt=\"Minimal Server Interface\" width=\"670\" height=\"337\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/minimal-server-interface.png 670w, https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/minimal-server-interface-300x151.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 670px) 100vw, 670px\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">Once the process is completed, type <i>Restart-Computer<\/i> to reboot the machine. The Minimal Server Interface will automatically open Server Manager Console:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3818\" src=\"https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/minimal-server-interface-server-manager-console.png\" alt=\"Minimal Server Interface Server Manager Console\" width=\"1139\" height=\"716\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">Note that you may choose to remove the <i>Graphical Management Tools and Infrastructure<\/i> feature from a full installation of Windows Server 2012. In this case, <i>Windows Explorer<\/i>, <i>IE<\/i>, <i>Start screen<\/i> and the <i>Desktop<\/i> will be removed from your machine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">To revert a Minimal Server installation to a full version, use the <i>Install-WindowsFeature Server-Gui-Shell<\/i> command within Windows Powershell:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3823\" src=\"https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/revert-minimal-server-installation.png\" alt=\"Revert Minimal Server Installation\" width=\"672\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/revert-minimal-server-installation.png 672w, https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/revert-minimal-server-installation-300x150.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 672px) 100vw, 672px\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva,sans-serif;\">Windows Server Core installations offers a couple of benefits to your servers by providing a limited attack surface and a better server performance because only the necessary services are installed and the server does not have to handle extra load. The overall server performance is increased with a Server Core edition. Disadvantages of using this edition are the fact that it requires some extra technical knowledge because the server can only be administrated by using commands and also note that the core edition supports a limited number of roles that can be installed. How you install and configure servers depends on the network requirements and the purpose of the machines. Being able to switch between the full installation and the core edition offers a huge aid in terms of flexibility because you can perform this action easily on the same server without having to install and configure a fresh machine.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Windows Server 2012 comes with a couple of new features that can be used to make your life as a System Administrator much better.
