This may be all that people seem to care about, in the latest update to Microsoft\u2019s controversial new Windows, but there are<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">actually some decent improvements in this substantial update. So, now that the idea of a <a title=\"Windows 8 Review-Top 5 Reasons it\u2019s Better\" href=\"\/blog\/windows-8-review-top-5-reasons-its-the-best-os\/\">Windows 8 PC<\/a> isn\u2019t one that makes you feel queasy, the big <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">question is: can it run games?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Initial reports seem to be positive, with many gamers reporting that they\u2019re seeing improved FPS (frames per second) even at maximum settings. Battlefield 4, a popular<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">benchmark for gamers, has been recording a 10-15% improvement in performance. There is another contingent, with their own set of results that argues there <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">is a negligible difference between the two platforms.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hardocp.com\/article\/2013\/11\/24\/battlefield_4_windows_7_vs_81_performance_review\/5#.U3oWhVhdVB9\">HardOCP<\/a><\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tomshardware.co.uk\/windows-8-gaming-performance,review-32553.html\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Toms Hardware<img class=\"extlink-icon\" src=\"https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/plugins\/external-links-nofollow-open-in-new-tab-favicon\/images\/extlink.png\"><\/a> both ran comprehensive tests on the new<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">platform. HardOCP used Battlefield 4 as their testing grounds. Toms Hardware used a whole collection of games including: Battlefield 3, Borderlands 2, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Crisis 2 and Dirt: Showdown. Both sites set benchmarks with AMD and NVIDIA hardware.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Is There A Performance Advantage?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/8.1-performance.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-2264\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/8.1-performance.jpg\" alt=\"Performance Improvement with 8.1?\" width=\"172\" height=\"149\"><\/a>HARDOCP: Windows 8.1 has a consistent <a title=\"Performance Monitoring\" href=\"\/help\/sm_5_6\/monitor_perfmon_counter.aspx\">performance advantage over Windows 7<\/a>. This advantage extended not only to the GPU\u2019s, but also to the game performance <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">during play. When it comes to performance, it would appear that NVIDIA is getting the most out of the 8.1 update. TOMS: All of their graphs were within the margin of error of one another, implying that in terms of performance there\u2019s a negligible difference to the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">discerning gamer.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Is Image Quality Any Better?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/video-quality.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-2262\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/video-quality.jpg\" alt=\"8.1 Video Quality\" width=\"145\" height=\"151\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/video-quality.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/video-quality-288x300.jpg 288w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 145px) 100vw, 145px\"><\/a>HARDOCP: Negligible, the advantages were so small (3-6%) that they were unable to raise the resolution of the game, or the anti-aliasing. Essentially, the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">game will look the same on your computer, no matter what OS you use.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Is The Gameplay Experience Better?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/gameplay-experience.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-2265\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/gameplay-experience.jpg\" alt=\"Is the Gameplay Experience Better?\" width=\"170\" height=\"138\"><\/a>HARDOCP: A resounding yes. While playing on Windows 7 HardOCP experienced \u2018choppiness\u2019 as they played in both the multiplayer and \u2018test range\u2019 maps. This<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">choppiness was more pronounced on the NVIDIA card than the AMD. Once they upgraded to 8.1, the choppiness disappeared and moving was much smoother in both <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">the test and multiplayer map.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">TOMS: Not really, of the ten games they sampled, only one showed a significant difference in frame rate, and that was actually a reduction from 86.6 to 81 <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">FPS. Even so, this drop is so negligible as to not really be noticeable unless you\u2019re tracking it.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Toms Hardware did post this caveat to their review, however: \u201csome of the performance, power management, compatibility, and battery efficiency improvements that would have required a service pack update in the past<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">are now being made available through Windows Update much sooner.<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Thus, it\u2019s possible that, in some situations, performance and compatibility will improve on zero-day as a result of Microsoft\u2019s new delivery mechanism.\u201d<strong><br>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Is It Worth It?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/windows-8.1-good-for-gaming.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2263\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/windows-8.1-good-for-gaming.jpg\" alt=\"Gaming with 8.1 - Yes or No?\" width=\"138\" height=\"122\"><\/a>For HardOCP, with their target audience being BF4 players, the decision was tight. There is a small performance advantage, but not necessarily enough of<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">one to justify the upgrade. It\u2019s definitely faster, so those looking for a competitive edge may be tempted. If you\u2019re just looking for an upgrade to your <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">visuals however, you\u2019re probably best off giving it a miss.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">As far as Tom\u2019s Hardware is concerned however, there really is a negligible difference between the systems, so if your only reason to <a title=\"Migrate from Windows XP \u2013 Which OS?\" href=\"\/blog\/migrate-from-windows-xp-which-os\/\">upgrade to windows <\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a title=\"Migrate from Windows XP \u2013 Which OS?\" href=\"\/blog\/migrate-from-windows-xp-which-os\/\">8.1<\/a> is to improve your gaming performance, they would advise against it.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Optimizing for Gaming<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\">If you do decide to upgrade your OS to 8.1, there are a couple of things you can do to ensure that it\u2019s operating to the best of its ability:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Remove time-wasting animations \u2013 While these animations look nice, they don\u2019t do anything for your computer\u2019s performance. By turning off these <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">animations you often find your computer runs a lot smoother.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Optimize your hard drives \u2013 A diminishing hard drive can cause your PC to have performance issues, so it\u2019s a good idea to analyze and defrag it to <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">ensure high levels of performance.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Elevate your CPU priority \u2013 By default, every process in your system is set to \u2018normal\u2019 CPU priority. This priority level is adaptable, and can be <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">altered to give your primary programs the extra CPU power they need to run at optimal levels.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Shut down unnecessary background services \u2013 Windows 8 runs background services at all times to ensure that they\u2019re available when the user wants them.<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">However, these services can be a drain on resources. Stopping them from loading at start-up not only reduces the time it takes for your computer to be <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">ready, it also means that your computer runs smoother as a whole.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Manage your power settings \u2013 Windows computers are automatically set to \u2018balanced\u2019 power settings. These settings favor energy consumption over<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">performance. It is possible to change your settings to \u2018high performance\u2019 which has no concerns about the amount of power drawn by the computer and<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">therefore allows your machine to live up to its full potential. Not recommended for those of you running laptops however as this will run the battery <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">down incredibly quickly.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Not Great, But Not Bad<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/not-bad-not-good.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2266 \" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/not-bad-not-good.jpg\" alt=\"8.1 - Not Bad, Not Good for Gaming\" width=\"101\" height=\"101\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/not-bad-not-good.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/not-bad-not-good-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 101px) 100vw, 101px\"><\/a>Rounding up what\u2019s been discovered, it\u2019s clear that Microsoft has made some big changes to produce an OS that is capable of running games smoothly.<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">However, the difference is not so significant that those gamers already running Windows 7 would be tempted by the change.
