You only want to heat the plastic enough to shrink. You DO NOT want to catch it on fire. It should only take a few moments holding the flame under each wire to do this.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<a href=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/10_dell-2950-server-fan-shrink-heat-tubes.jpg\" rel=\"\" style=\"\" target=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Dell PE 2950 Fan Shrink Heat Tubes\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-253\" height=\"504\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/10_dell-2950-server-fan-shrink-heat-tubes.jpg\" style=\"\" title=\"Dell PE 2950 Fan Shrink Heat Tubes\" width=\"595\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/10_dell-2950-server-fan-shrink-heat-tubes.jpg 595w, https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/10_dell-2950-server-fan-shrink-heat-tubes-300x254.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 595px) 100vw, 595px\"><\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<h2>\n\t<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma,geneva,sans-serif;\">Putting it Back Together<\/span><\/span><br>\n<\/h2>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma,geneva,sans-serif;\">You\u2019re now ready to place the gray connector back in the black bracket, and place the black bracket back over the fan itself. You\u2019ll now have some extra wire hanging out that you are going to want to secure somehow against the fan. If you don\u2019t, you risk having the wires accidentally come in contact with the blades of the fan. Or even worse, having them touch against the heatsink and melting or causing a fire. You obviously don\u2019t want that!<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma,geneva,sans-serif;\">As you can see in the image below, we have used a plastic tie to secure the wires to one side, after doubling them back, and then looping back up to the front. Basically, use your own judgment how you want to secure them so that you are able to lock the fan back into the server without the wires jiggling loose.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<a href=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/11_dell-2950-server-fan-final-modifications.jpg\" rel=\"\" style=\"\" target=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Dell PE 2950 Fan Wiring Mods Complete\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-254\" height=\"503\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/11_dell-2950-server-fan-final-modifications.jpg\" style=\"\" title=\"Dell PE 2950 Fan Wiring Mods Complete\" width=\"595\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/11_dell-2950-server-fan-final-modifications.jpg 595w, https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/11_dell-2950-server-fan-final-modifications-300x253.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 595px) 100vw, 595px\"><\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"font-family: tahoma,geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">You should have gotten the hang of this now, so go back and repeat the steps on the remaining fans. You have 5 minutes to complete each of the remaining fans. We\u2019re timing you. Get to it!<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"font-family: tahoma,geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Ok, seriously, this is a pretty tricky task if you\u2019ve never done any soldering or rewiring before. But once you get the hang of it, you should be able to help improve the lives of many other PowerEdge Server owners by saving their senses of hearing.\u00a0 Feel free to charge what you feel it is worth.\u00a0 ; )<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"font-family: tahoma,geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">One final thing we suggest is testing. Even though we\u2019ve done everything we can to make sure this should work without a hitch for you, it certainly isn\u2019t going to hurt, once you have all the fans converted and installed, to test them after starting up.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"font-family: tahoma,geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">If you have it available, we suggest <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dell.com\/support\/troubleshooting\/us\/en\/04\/KCS\/KcsArticles\/ArticleView?c=us&amp;docid=578268\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">installing a DRAC card<img class=\"extlink-icon\" src=\"https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/plugins\/external-links-nofollow-open-in-new-tab-favicon\/images\/extlink.png\"><\/a> (Dell Remote Access Card) to test fan speed and functionality, and diagnose any problems.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"font-family: tahoma,geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Below is the final result. A brand spankin\u2019 shiny new Dell 2950 server, minus the fleet of jet engines, air raid sirens, tornado sirens, or whatever deafeningly loud sound effect you decide to compare it to.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"font-family: tahoma,geneva,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Isn\u2019t it a beaut?<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<a href=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/11_dell-2950-server-rewired-fans-installed.jpg\" rel=\"\" style=\"\" target=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Dell PE 2950 Fans Rewired and Installed in Server\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-255\" height=\"453\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/11_dell-2950-server-rewired-fans-installed.jpg\" style=\"\" title=\"Dell PE 2950 Fans Rewired and Installed in Server\" width=\"596\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/11_dell-2950-server-rewired-fans-installed.jpg 596w, https:\/\/www.poweradmin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/11_dell-2950-server-rewired-fans-installed-300x228.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 596px) 100vw, 596px\"><\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<h2>\n\t<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma,geneva,sans-serif;\">Much Better! But Not Perfect \ud83d\ude41<\/span><\/span><br>\n<\/h2>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma,geneva,sans-serif;\">There is one final thing you may find a bit annoying (although to me, a bit annoying is much better than deaf.) The longer the server is on, the more the temperature sensors will cause the fans to slow (after realizing it doesn\u2019t need them at full throttle to stay cool.) This is because there is also a threshold, at which point the server begins to doubt itself, since the fans are running too slowly and quietly. At this point, they will immediately throttle back to start up speed. The whole process takes several minutes, at least in our case. It\u2019s not a terrible problem, and it\u2019s better than the original noise, but it certainly can still be annoying.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma,geneva,sans-serif;\">We will be searching and testing to come up with a solution for this, and if we find something, will post a follow up article.
